HOW WE CAN HELP
At Pillar Legal, we understand all aspects of the various legal challenges startups face, from formation to exit, and everything in between including financings, employment, equity compensation, intellectual property, terms of service, data privacy and commercial contracts.
Pillar Legal regularly advises video game companies of all sizes, including many of the world’s largest developers and publishers of mobile, PC and console games, on development, licensing and publishing deals, regulatory compliance, financings, mergers and acquisitions, and cross-border transactions.
As a boutique firm with attorneys located in both the U.S. and China, Pillar Legal is uniquely situated to advise international clients on U.S. market entry and regulatory compliance. Whether you are coming from China, Europe or elsewhere, we can help you navigate the various legal requirements to enter the U.S. market.
Our founder lived and worked in China for over a decade, serving as general counsel for Shanda, China’s then leading online game company. Our firm was “born” in Shanghai and continues to have an office in the city even after we established our U.S. office in San Francisco.
We regularly assist international clients with their China market entry and regulatory compliance matters, as well as financings, investment and mergers and acquisitions.

OUR CLIENTS
Christine Taarup
Former General Manager and Chair of the Board of Eidos Shanghai, a Square Enix company, and former Business Development Director of Square Enix Europe
Greg Pilarowski is the best sparring partner one can have when doing business in China. Greg is an excellent lawyer and a very pleasant human being, he masters bilingual and dual cultural (Chinese – English) negotiations, and Greg has an extraordinary insight into the Chinese Games and Entertainment industry. Greg has finalized publishing agreements for me and guided my actions while I headed Eidos Shanghai, and he has beautifully educated our staff and sub-contractors in the importance of IP protection.
Jazy Zhang
Former CFO of Giant Interactive Group Inc.
Greg is one of only a few lawyers who have in-depth knowledge and experience in connection with the video game industry in China and in the U.S. I have had the pleasure of working with Greg in connection with negotiating multiple online game licenses with major players in the U.S. and South Korea to localize and publish their games in China. Greg understood the technical aspects of games and was able to guide us through certain challenging contract provisions to maximize protections for us.
Stefano Corazza
Former CEO of Mixamo
I worked with Pillar Legal for several years as the CEO of Mixamo (acquired by Adobe Systems). With Pillar Legal we negotiated some of the business’ key licensing agreements with large public companies who were often represented by much larger law firms. Pillar Legal’s deep knowledge of the software licensing space and unique responsiveness and adaptability made it possible for us to close many important deals in a very timely and cost-effective way. As a business owner it makes a big difference when you know you can trust the work of your attorneys.
William Bao Bean
General Partner at SOSVentures and Managing Director at China Accelerator and Mobile Only Accelerator (MOX), former Managing Director at Singtel Innov8
I cannot say enough good things about Greg and the Pillar Legal team. They are bi-coastal (San Francisco – Shanghai), bilingual and bicultural. I’ve done over 40 venture deals with Greg over the last 8 years on the investment, sell and buy side, and I often highly recommend that our portfolio companies utilize Pillar Legal for their legal needs.
American McGee
Co-founder and CEO of Spicy Horse Games, creator of American McGee’s Alice
Greg’s unique experience with and knowledge of China-specific game industry contracts, negotiation strategies, and business practices were essential in the formation and ongoing operation of Spicy Horse’s Shanghai development studio. His thoughtful approach to costs, near round-the-clock accessibility and proven expertise have earned my complete trust and hearty endorsement.
Bill Wang
Vice President and Head of Global Business Development at Perfect World
Greg is one of the best legal professionals we have worked with. His analytical ability and years of experience in the video game industry enables him to provide thoughtful, thorough, and creative legal advice. He listens carefully to client questions and he responds quickly and clearly with analysis and advice aimed directly at the issue. Greg understands our business needs and is a valuable advisor to Perfect World.
Chen Tianqiao
Founder of Shanda
Greg served as the first general counsel of Shanda, helping to complete our IPO and Nasdaq listing along with numerous acquisitions and key licensing agreements. In addition, Greg led our legal team in winning a key litigation relating to our core product. Greg and I have always spoken to one another in Mandarin, and over the years he has used his understanding of both China and the U.S. to help guide us through many international legal matters. I have confidence in his judgement and value his advice.
Peter Tseng
